| The Challenged CIO
The timing and degree of economic recovery remains increasingly uncertain. Previous downturns in the economy have usually passed CIO's by, but not any more. CIO's are facing new and demanding challenges.
Limited revenue growth and eroding margins, not exactly the everyday language of CIO's, are forcing companies to reduce funding and to re-evaluate the criteria for all IT investments.
IT initiatives must now have clear and compelling reasons to obtain funding and the commitment to proceed.
For CIO's, the real challenge is to bring clarity to the significance of an IT initiative and why it aligns to corporate priorities. They also need to anticipate the "intangible" requirements surrounding it to reduce the odds of failure or subsequent changes in scope-deliverables, timelines or resource allocations.
CIO's must show how the monetary impact of an initiative will improve both operational and overall organizational performance. This can only be achieved by communicating, in real-time, the status of it to all stakeholders in terms that they can understand.
More than ever, CIO's must show explicityly how an IT initiative aligns with company priorities and will increase shareholder value.
